Hey Harbord! With clubs starting up again, I’d like to discuss one club in particular that is starting up in person this year. Harbord’s very own Bent On Change club, our school’s Gay Straight Alliance Club (GSA). Bent on Change meets on Wednesdays at lunch in the library or Room 220. We discuss different ways to showcase everyone in the LGBTQ+ spectrum. We talk about music artists, activists and so much more. Bent on Change is starting up again this year after spending last year virtually. Everyone is welcome no matter your grade or how you identify. The first meeting will be about LGBTQ+ music artists and we will be watching some music videos as well.
In the past we have done many things in the assemblies that the school puts together. For example, the big event we host or help with is the International Pink Day assembly and we collaborate with many clubs for this as well. The Grade 10’s-12’s might remember this as well as last year's Women’s Day Assembly. Bent on Change’s piece on that, speaking about LGBTQ+ women and their accomplishments. Also, we did a piece on LGBTQ+ peoples history and the changes they have helped make throughout time. Bent on Change also participates in board-wide activities, as well as conferences and panels around LGBTQ+ peoples and their struggles as they grew up in society.
Announcements have been made about our first meeting coming up on Wednesday October 20th at lunch. I hope this article has helped to peak your interest into joining Bent on Change and myself and the others in Bent on Change hope to see you at our next meeting.
